A hand-dug Well in Madina Warsame farm

After twelve months of excavation was reached first aquifer.
Actually it is very difficult to talk about the whole story of the well because the heavy labour job and hardship which took more than a year.
In Somalia no water supply constructed outside the big towns, so all the inhabitants in the villages surrounding Madina Warsame farm area used to get water from the river.
Women would always walk to the river carrying big heavy jerry cans on their backs every day.
They would always bring water from the river 3 times a day; that is traditionally women’s work .
Naturally river water is very contaminated and carries many different infectious diseases such as; bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, Salmonellosis, Shigellosis, Bilharzias, cholera, Tuberculosis, typhoid, Giardiasis etc.
A survey made on this area by experts from Madina Warsame Development Organization indicated that 30% of the inhabitants are infected with different diseases from the river water.
This caused Madina Warsame Development Organization to start digging a well inside Madina Warsame farm on 4th may 2008(pathway between Afgoi and balad districts), in order to let these inhabitants get enough clean water constantly.
This well has been prepared for ten villages around the farm to obtain fresh water regularly.
Finally after a year, water level was reached, digging a depth of 60.50 meters of dry and water height of 9 meters, now the total depth of the well is 69.50 meters and submersible pump was installed.
The only problem was that we have not reached the main source of water, that would allow us to continue pumping without interruption but now we have reached a water level which must be pumped with limited interruption, checking the time of pumping so the submersible pump that is currently installed in the well is 5.5 hp, which allows 30 minutes consecutive of pumping and then switch off and wait until the water mark returns the first level, 30 minutes is obtained quantity of water equal to 30 barrels (i.e. the submersible pump can fill a barrel per minute from that depth of the well) Currently the village in Madina warsame farm and the surrounding villages get sufficient quantity of water, pumping twice a day (i.e. 60 barrels).
We hope this well-water will cover the villagers’ needs for clean water and that was the goal of Madina Warsame Development Organization.
We don’t know if it is sufficient in the future especially in warm seasons like Gilal-season in which water level is usually lowered.
